Binaural beats come wrapped in the biggest promises in the focus-music world: entrain your brainwaves, switch on flow, study like a machine. The real evidence is thinner, stranger, and more useful than the marketing.
What binaural beats are
Play a slightly different pure tone into each ear — say 200 Hz left and 210 Hz right — and your auditory system manufactures a third, phantom pulse at the difference: a 10 Hz "beat" that exists only inside your head. Headphones are required; through speakers the tones mix in the air and the effect largely becomes an ordinary (monaural) beat.
The marketing story goes: brain activity has characteristic frequency bands (alpha around relaxed alertness, beta around active thinking, theta around drowsiness), so a beat at a chosen frequency should drag your brain into the matching state, like a metronome for neurons. This is called entrainment. It is a tidy story.
What the research actually shows
- The phantom beat is real — a robust, well-understood piece of auditory neuroscience. No dispute there.
- Meaningful brainwave entrainment is not well established. The measured neural response to binaural beats is small, and studies disagree about whether it changes overall brain state at all.
- Behavioural results are mixed. Across studies of attention, memory and anxiety, some find small benefits, some find nothing, and a few find small costs. Reviews of the literature consistently describe the evidence as inconsistent and the studies as small.
- Where benefits appear, mundane explanations fit. A steady tone masks environmental noise (the same job rain does), and expecting a focus aid to work is itself mildly focusing. Neither requires entrainment.
The fair summary: binaural beats are a real auditory illusion attached to an unproven mechanism and modest, inconsistent results. They are not dangerous for healthy listeners; they are just oversold.

Some people genuinely like working under them, and there is no shame in a tool that works partly by ritual — most focus tools do. Sensible ground rules:
- Use headphones, or you are mostly not getting binaural beats at all.
- Keep the volume low. Any benefit does not scale with loudness; fatigue does.
- Judge by your output, not the vibe. Two weeks, same tasks, with and without. Keep whatever the work says is better.
- Skip them if you have epilepsy or use a hearing device, and stop with anything that gives you headaches — ordinary caution, not a specific known harm.
